The most straightforward way to develop Evince is using GNOME Builder. Follow the instructions to clone a project in Builder, and use [email protected]:GNOME/evince.git or https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evince.git as the repository URL.

Builder is going to take care of obtaining the dependencies, and building Evince in a sandbox.
